Oakland Park is hosting a Community Meeting in City Hall Chambers regarding Neighborhood Participation Meetings (NPMs). This is your chance to share what’s working, what’s not, and what changes you’d like to see in the NPM process.
Some background on Neighborhood Participation Meetings: The stated purpose and intent of the NPM process as adopted in 2009 was to:
“emphasize the importance of citizen participation as early as possible in the planning process and its relationship to completing a successful development in Oakland Park. It is the intent of this section to encourage applicants to involve homeowners associations and individuals in the development review process. Target area: All homeowners associations and individuals … within seven hundred fifty (750) feet of the subject property and the two (2) closest homeowners associations. In the case where there are no homeowners associations within the 750 foot radius, planning and zoning staff will provide the applicant a list of the five (5) nearest homeowners associations’ contact information outside of the 750 foot radius line.”
[City code section 24-163(E)]
Until last summer, the city ran the meetings; there was a consistent registration form and meeting format, and all meetings were recorded. In July 2025, the city withdrew from formal involvement in the NPM process after questions about procedural errors were raised during an NPM. These procedural errors included failure to properly notify the correct neighborhoods as required by code.
The withdrawal by city staff subsequently created inconsistencies in the delivery and information provided during future meetings. Currently, there have been inconsistencies with the neighborhoods notified. Additionally, individuals within that 750-foot radius have not been receiving physical notice of NPMs for prospective developments.
Subsequently, there has been no consistent meeting format or platform, nor are there any requirements for recording to verify the content of these meetings. We believe that these meetings should be held in a consistent manner and should be recorded for verifiability of community feedback.
Your voice matters. Please attend this meeting to share your feedback and ideas on neighborhood outreach, public participation, and communication about development applications.
